The School of Architecture Planning and Geomatics at the University of Cape Town is committed to, through its teaching, research, and interactions with society generally, advancing the project of Architecture to address the needs of socially just and inclusive cities in a developing, post-apartheid South Africa.

To engage with this urgent transformative project, the School is seeking to appoint a new full-time staff member within the School. We seek architects from practice and academia; who are committed to the role that architectural design and research offer in critically addressing colonial and apartheid injustices, and who can show some evidence of this commitment. As we build and transform our School to responsibly address these substantial contextual issues, we are looking for individuals who can make relevant and impactful contributions through their teaching, research and social responsiveness activities.

Applicants should demonstrate evidence of engagement with, and commitment to, architecture, design research and architectural education within the global South context, and help us build intersectional methodologies and alternative pedagogies of knowledge production.

Applicants are expected to participate actively in the intellectual life of the School, and add new dimensions to the teaching of architecture, through studios, workshops and seminars that engage with the spatial legacy of the colonial project in South Africa and the continent, and support innovation, cross-disciplinary work, and diversity.

For this particular position we are seeking a candidate for an Associate Professor position that can dedicate the time required to help steer and support the rich, diverse culture of the School, and contribute to the articulation of its leadership role. General responsibilities include teaching, research, administration and social responsiveness.

Minimum requirements for Lecturer level:

  • a Masters' degree (professional) or 5-year Bachelors' degree in architecture or equivalent
  • previous teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, or evidence of tutoring and/or examining

Minimum requirements for Senior Lecturer Level:

  • a Masters' degree (professional) or 5-year Bachelors' degree in architecture or equivalent
  • registration for a PhD degree and progress towards such a qualification
  • a record of recent independent and original contributions to research either through peer reviewed publication and / or awarded creative works
  • evidence of social responsiveness (see
  • at least five years teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level

The annual cost of employment, inclusive of all benefits, is R639 848 for Lecturer and R786 717 for Senior Lecturer. These are permanent appointments, subject to successful three year probation.
