We invite applications for one full time permanent position in the Department of Political Studies at UCT. The appointment will be made at the level of Senior Lecturer or Lecturer. The Department is responsible for teaching Politics, International Relations, Public Policy and Administration, and Transitional Justice at all levels, and it is one of the leading centres of research into politics, broadly conceived, on the African Continent. We have a preference for an appointment in the areas of Politics and International Relations, but we are willing to consider applications from exceptional candidates working in the broad areas of the discipline. We are seeking to fill this post as from 1 July 2019.

Requirements at Lecturer level include:

  • A PhD (or near completion of a PhD) in Political Studies or International Relations.
  • The capacity to engage in high-quality research.
  • The ability (or potential) to supervise postgraduate students.
  • Some teaching experience at tertiary level.

The ability to teach advanced postgraduate courses would be an advantage.

Requirements at Senior Lecturer level include:

  • A PhD in Political Studies or International Relations.
  • A proven track record of scholarly publications.
  • The capacity to engage in high-quality research.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students.
  • The capacity to teach advanced postgraduate courses.

Responsibilities:

The position involves a combination of research, teaching, and administration. The teaching and supervision duties of the appointee will be determined on the basis of the successful candidate's skills and research interests and priorities, and the needs of the department.

Appointment will take place in alignment with the Faculty's expectations for performance at each rank.

The respective annual remuneration packages, including benefits, for 2018 are as follows:
Lecturer: R 639 848
Senior Lecturer: R 786 717
