Lecturer / Senior Lecturer : Science Education

The Wits School of Education is seeking to appoint a suitable candidate at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level in the Division of Science Education. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to teaching in Life Sciences education at undergraduate and post-graduate levels as well contribute to research activities within the division. The area of expertise must be in Life Science generally, theories of science education and knowledge of pedagogy for teaching science. A working knowledge and experience of the South African school system will be an advantage, as well as evidence of organizational ability and willingness to work in a team.

The successful candidate will play the following roles:

Participating in teams which design, coordinate and present courses to undergraduate, post-graduate and in-service students in Life Sciences Education; and supervise postgraduate students' research in Science education as well as participate in the research activities of the Division of Science Education.

Qualifications and Experience:

The successful applicants must meet the following criteria:

Lecturer

  • Undergraduate degree with majors in Biology
  • A teaching qualification (B Ed/PGCE/PG Dip HE)
  • PhD in an appropriate field (Biology/Science Education/ Education)
  • Capacity to supervise research at post graduate level
  • Evidence of an emerging research profile (a publication record would be an advantage)
  • A track record of competent teaching in the disciplinary area in higher education
  • A track record in teaching and administratively managing large classes.
  • Good people skills and abilities to work as part of a team
  • Good computer literacy skills
  • Experience in teaching at High School and Tertiary level (preferably in teacher education) is desirable

Senior Lecturer

  • Undergraduate degree with majors in Biology
  • A teaching qualification (B Ed/PGCE/PG Dip HE)
  • PhD in an appropriate field(Biology/Science Education/Education)
  • An independent research profile and proven publication record
  • Capacity to teach and supervise at the tertiary level, preferably must have a sustained record of research supervision
  • A track record of competent teaching in the disciplinary area at school and/or in higher education
  • A track record in teaching and administratively managing large classes
  • Good people skills and working in a team
  • Experience in teaching at high school and/or University (preferably in teacher education) is desirable

Remuneration: dependent on qualifications and experience
