The Faculty of Science invites applications for the Headship of the School of Physics at the University of Witwatersrand.
The School of Physics, the largest in the country, amongst other engages in internationally competitive research within very diverse fields, some emerging and some established, including theoretical and experimental high energy physics, experimental solid state physics, nuclear science, renewable energy research, materials physics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, astronomy, astrophysics and astro-particle physics, high-throughput electronics, photonics, space propulsion, and physics education. The School hosts several DST-NRF Chairs, is home to the Collider Particle Physics and Materials Physics Research Institutes with significant experimental infrastructure, the Mandelstam Institute for Theoretical Physics, plays an important role in the Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials, and hosts the Gauteng node of the National Institute for Theoretical Physics. In addition, the School has an active teaching programme that reaches over 3000 students annually and an outreach programme that includes management of a Planetarium. The Head of School is expected to provide academic vision and leadership as well as managerial coordination for different units and programmes required to maintain and build on the School's position of excellence. S/he will have attained sufficient academic and/or professional standing to command the respect and confidence of the members of the School and will possess high-level managerial skills. The headship will involve the overall management of the School, namely co-ordinating the teaching, research and administrative activities; planning and promotion of academic activities in the wider community; human resources recruitment and management; financial and infrastructure resource management. The successful candidate will be appointed as Head of School for a fixed term of five years (with a possibility of a second term), and will have a place in the School as a member of the academic staff after the period served as Head of School. Teaching of courses during the term of office is encouraged, and the Head must continue with his/her research activities.
An appropriate PhD and administration experience preferably within a University is required.
