The Centre for Educational Testing for Access and Placement (CETAP) seeks to appoint a permanent full-time Statistician preferably with educational testing experience at the level of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer.

The Centre for Educational Testing for Access and Placement's (CETAP) mission is to provide educational testing that contribute to access and success at the University of Cape Town and in the broader higher education and training sector. In realizing this mission, CETAP develops educational tests that are reliable and valid in these higher educational contexts. Its educational measurement and learning analytics research supports and informs teaching and learning and educational policy relating to admissions (selection and placement) and throughput within these contexts.

Under the leadership of the Test Development Coordinator and in collaboration with the research team, the main purpose of this position is to contribute to CETAP's research programme through the provision of statistical analysis for agreed upon reports, presentations and projects. This also includes conceptualising and carrying out independent research relevant to the mission of CETAP.

Requirements at Lecturer level:

  • At least a Master's degree in Statistics, Educational Measurement, Quantitative Psychology or any other relevant degree
  • Demonstrated research writing abilities
  • Good communication skills and the ability to explain basic statistical concepts
  • High Level Knowledge of statistical software such as R, SAS, SPSS, STATA, Statistica, Educational testing software, etc.
  • Experience in setting-up databases and report writing

Requirements at Senior Lecturer level:

  • A Ph.D. degree or substantial progress made in acquiring a Ph.D. degree in Statistics, Educational Measurement, Quantitative Psychology or any other relevant degree
  • Demonstrated research writing abilities
  • Good communication skills and the ability to explain basic statistical concepts
  • High Level Knowledge of statistical software such as R, SAS, SPSS, STATA, Statistica, Educational testing software, etc.
  • Experience in setting-up databases and report writing
  • Conceptualising and conducting own research relevant to the mission of CETAP

Preference will be given to applicants with:

  • Experience in analysing test data using statistical software
  • Experience in data analysis/statistical support in an educational testing environment
  • Experience in setting-up databases and report writing
  • Experience as a statistician working under complex project conditions

Responsibilities

  • Providing statistical analysis for agreed upon research, reports, presentations and projects
  • Liaising with Research teams in terms of tests, items and domain specific statistical requirements
  • Writing of preliminary reports based on analysed data
