The School of Languages and Literatures invites applications for a permanent appointment as Lecturer in Classics. The appointment will commence on 1 July 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Requirements

  • A completed PhD in any field of Classical Studies, or close to completion
  • A clearly laid-out research strategy
  • A proven competence to teach courses on the ancient cultures and history of the Mediterranean, including Egypt, North Africa and the Near East during the Graeco-Roman period
  • Experience in the teaching of both Greek and Latin, at undergraduate and, preferably, postgraduate levels
  • A proven ability to contribute to the teaching of courses across a wide range of subjects within the discipline, including courses in etymology

Responsibilities

  • Teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students at all levels
  • Publication and Supervision of research
  • Active participation in the School's research culture
  • Administration commensurate with experience
  • To develop the section's offerings in the field of ancient North Africa and the Near East

The annual remuneration package, including benefits at Lecturer level is R683 358
