The Division of Geomatics in the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics enjoys an international reputation for its activities in the fields of Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Land Tenure/Cadastral Systems, Geo-Information, and Engineering Surveying and is one of the leading Geomatics divisions on the African continent.

The Division is seeking to appoint a dynamic and motivated academic to join their team.

Minimum requirements for Lecturer level:

  • 4-year university degree in Geomatics/Surveying equivalent to HEQSF level 8;
  • a Masters' degree in geomatics/surveying;
  • evidence of research activity or more than 5 years post-qualification practice experience in photogrammetry, and laser scanning (aerial and terrestrial), or precise engineering surveying;
  • a demonstrated ability to contribute substantially to the teaching requirements of the Division, or suitable postqualification industry experience (minimum of 5 years).

Minimum requirements for Senior Lecturer Level:

  • 4-year university degree in Geomatics/Surveying equivalent to HEQSF level 8;
  • PhD degree in geomatics/surveying;
  • research output post-PhD in photogrammetry and laser scanning (aerial and terrestrial), with a specific interest in 3D modelling, or precise engineering surveying;
  • a demonstrated ability to contribute substantially to the teaching requirements of the Division, or suitable postqualification industry experience (minimum of 10 years).

The following will be advantageous:

  • Registration as a Geomatics Professional in South Africa in at least one of the following categories: Land Surveying, Engineering or Photogrammetry, or equivalent registration with a professional geomatics/surveying council in another country
  • Strong interest in computer programming.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching at undergraduate and honours level, including running student fieldwork camps.
  • Supervision of postgraduate research.
  • Research in line with the requirements highlighted above.
  • Administration of courses and representing the Division on committees.
  • Engagement with the profession (e.g. South African Geomatics Institute and/or Geoinformation Society of South Africa).

The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and appropriate experience.

Lecturer: R683 358

Senior Lecturer: R834 707
