Two (2) PhD Scholarships: SARCHI Chair- Research on the Health Workforce for Equity and Quality

The DST/NRF Research Chair invites applications for TWO (2) three-year full-time doctoral scholarships. The successful candidates shall participate in the research of the DST/NRF Chair entitled: "Research on the Health Workforce for Equity and Quality" located in the Wits School of Public Health.

The Chair is committed to building capacity of South Africans in health policy and systems research, offering a nurturing, supportive environment that emphasizes mentorship and skills-development for people passionate about a career in the field. The successful candidates will work under the guidance and supervision of the Chair, Professor Laetitia Rispel.


Applicants must have:

  • South African citizenship
  • Obtained a Master’s degree in the last five years in any suitable field, such as Public Health, Medicine, Nursing, Therapeutic Sciences or relevant Measurement Sciences (Demography, Biostatistics)
  • Evidence of research activity
  • Demonstrate evidence of robust scholarly performance
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency, good conceptual and writing skills
The fellowship is tenable for a period of three years, and candidates are expected to have completed a PhD by the end of the term.

Short-listed candidates will be interviewed for the fellowship, and will be expected to present the concept note. Please note that award of the fellowship is subject to the candidate's acceptance to the Wits School of Public Health inter-disciplinary PhD programme.

  • A letter of application, containing a brief motivation for the PhD fellowship
  • A detailed curriculum vitae highlighting academic qualifications, work experience and list of publications and conference presentations (where relevant)
  • A five-page concept note for a PhD Study on one of the following topics:
    1. Comparative labour market analysis of remuneration/ salary structures of health professionals in the public health sector
    2. Impact of financial incentives on recruitment and retention in the South African public health sector
    3. Factors that influence job location decisions of health professionals in the public and private health sectors
    4. Examining migration of health professionals in South Africa
    5. Performance and accountability of the health workforce, including absenteeism, multiple job holding, or productivity
    6. Analyzing the ethical dimensions of health worker industrial action and health service delivery in the South African health system
    7. Comparative analysis of health workforce governance in Brazil, India, China and South Africa
  • Copies of certified academic transcripts, including those pertaining to both the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
  • Names and contact details or letters of reference from at least three referees (inclusive of two academics that have taught, supervised or worked alongside the applicant).
  • Certified copy of ID.
