The Department of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science at the University of Cape Town seeks to fill a permanent academic position in organic chemistry at the level of Professor or Associate Professor. We seek to strengthen the department's teaching of organic chemistry and research in synthetic organic chemistry. The successful applicant will be expected to provide leadership in the field of organic chemistry at departmental level through evidence of a deep understanding of synthetic organic chemistry.

Requirements include:

For appointment at Professor level:

  • A PhD in the field of synthetic organic chemistry and at least eight years relevant academic experience, with at least three years at the associate professor level or higher;
  • Experience in teaching organic chemistry at undergraduate level with evidence of teaching excellence and leadership in curriculum development in organic chemistry at the undergraduate level;
  • A strong track record of supervision of PhD and MSc students to graduation as primary supervisor;
  • An outstanding track record of high-quality publications in peer reviewed journals as corresponding author, with a substantial number in high impact journals. A successful candidate must enjoy considerable international recognition by their peers for the high quality and impact of their recent research outputs;
  • Evidence of a track record of conference attendance at the international level, including invited oral conference presentations;
  • Evidence of long-term success in raising grants as Principal Investigator;
  • Evidence of academic leadership at Departmental level and beyond.

For appointment at Associate Professor Level:

  • A PhD in the field of synthetic organic chemistry and at least six years relevant academic experience, with at least three years at senior lecturer level or higher;
  • Experience in teaching organic chemistry at undergraduate level with evidence of teaching excellence;
  • A solid track record of supervision of PhD and MSc students to graduation as primary supervisor;
  • An excellent track record of high-quality publications in peer reviewed journals as corresponding author, with a significant number in high impact journals. A successful candidate must be an established researcher with a sustained recent record of productivity in the field and some evidence that they enjoy international recognition;
  • Evidence of a track record of conference attendance at the international level, including invited oral conference presentations;
  • Evidence of success in raising grants as Principal Investigator;
  • Evidence of academic leadership at Departmental level.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • To develop a strong research programme in an area of focus in the Department;
  • To develop and teach courses in the sub-discipline of organic chemistry at both introductory and senior undergraduate level (including service courses) and give specialist lectures at the Honours (4th year) level; The successful candidate must have the vision and experience to oversee the full organic curriculum and provide direction within the discipline;
  • To supervise Honours, MSc and PhD students;
  • To contribute significantly to administration in the Department and Faculty of Science.

Professor: R1 237 822

Associate Professor: R1 002 002
