Professional Communication Studies (PCS) sits in the Faulty of Engineering and the Built Environment. It was created in 2004 to provide bespoke courses to the students in the faculty according to each department's – and degree's – needs. Its purpose is to ensure students acquire competency in written and spoken technical communication. To this end, PCS offers a range of interventions from lectures to tutorials and coaching. The format is either full credit courses which run over a semester (for 8 or 12 credits) or modules which are integrated into an accredited course of the host department. All of the interventions meet requirements of the ECSA Level Outcomes and some are answerable for them. Current PCS engagement with departments and in the years of student study are:

  • Chemical engineering: 1st, 2nd and 3rd year; Civil engineering: 4th year; Electrical Engineering: 2nd and 4th year;
  • Mechanical Engineering: 2 nd and 4th year (Mat Sci Hons);
  • Architecture, Planning and Geomatics: 3rd year (Geomatics) 4th year (Planning).

PCS wishes to appoint a permanent, 20 hours per week teaching-only academic at lecturer level. The candidate will be responsible for teaching, tutoring orals, designing course material, creating new exercises, tests and exams and marking. The candidate will report to the Deputy Dean.

Minimum requirements:

  • Master's degree.
  • 5 years' relevant experience in training or teaching.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in lecturing and English language communication.
  • Demonstrable IT skills including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and use of referencing tools.

The annual cost of employment, including benefits (where applicable), is R341 679.
