As part of the new Generation of Academic Practitioners Programme (nGAP), sponsored by the Department of Higher Education and Training in terms of the Staffing South Africa's Universities Framework (SSAUF), the Centre for Film and Media Studies in the Faculty of Humanities is seeking to attract black South African applicants of 40 years or younger for one full-time position as lecturer in the Centre for Film and Media Studies.

The nGAP appointment is a full-time permanent position that covers a six-year development period: a 3-year development programme, followed by a 3-year induction. The successful candidate will be provided with mentoring in order to nurture her/his academic career. The appointment will be governed by a contract that clearly stipulates the expectations, obligations, roles and responsibilities of the university and of the appointed academic.

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD degree or close to completion in film and television studies
  • Significant knowledge of theory and methods in the field of film and television studies

Advantageous

  • Teaching experience in the field of film and television studies or related field
  • Practical film making skills
  • Administrative experience

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to complete or make considerable progress towards completion of their PhD studies (if not already in possession of a PhD) in the first three years of the programme. They will be given a substantially reduced teaching load, mentorship support and research funding to do so. In addition, they will teach and supervise students at the post-graduate and undergraduate level and contribute to the Departments social engagement activities. They will work to develop a research profile through appropriate academic publishing. The post is envisaged to contribute to the Department's work in African Film and Television in particular.

The annual cost of employment, including benefits for 2019 is R683 358
