Duties and responsibilities:

  • Establish firm-wide strategic and organisational diversity and inclusion initiatives and helps foster an environment at the university that embraces each individual’s unique background.
  • Analyse, develop and facilitate institutional change and social justice priorities with and among a range of constituencies inside and outside the university.
  • Conceives, develops and oversees the implementation of programs that enhance the university’s reputation and image as a leader in diversity and inclusion programs.
  • Promoting transformation and inclusivity.
  • Manage all aspects of the university campus diversity and social justice education programming.
  • Monitor campus climate and national trends relevant to institutional change and social justice and provide responsive leadership.
  • Manage departmental budget.
  • Initiate fund-raising inititiatives for Social Justice, Diversity and intellectual transformative practices.
  • Advising staff and students on matters related to institutional change and social justice.
  • Manage and supervise staff.
  • Handle information that is confidential and/or sensitive.
  • Embrace an institutional culture of care, social justice, equity, and access.
  • Demonstrate an overarching commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence in higher education.
  • In collaboration with relevant roleplayers, develop and deliver training programs on diversity, social justice, institutional change and inclusion topics.
  • Travel regularly between all UFS campuses to build relationships and understand the needs of diversity and inclusion efforts of all geographic locations.
  • Serves as a resource, mentor and advisor to university management and relevant stakeholders across the UFS.

Inherent requirements:

  • Master’s degree on NQF level 9 in Social Sciences or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ relevant experience in institutional change, transformation and social justice and/or diversity and inclusion, gender andti-discrimination issues, human rights advocacy.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ management experience.

  • The ability to manage excellent staff, student and all relevant stakeholder relationships in a changing higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated experience promoting dialogue amongst students, faculty, and staff as well as with community members and other university constituencies
  • Proven ability to inspire and nurture a climate of inclusiveness, collegiality and shared responsibility.
  • Display broad-based knowledge of diverse populations with an emphasis on multicultural, LGBTQIA+, underrepresented, and underserved populations of ethnic and racial cultures, faith traditions, local and international communities.

Recommendations:

  • PhD on NQF level 10 in Social Sciences or related field.
  • Experience within the higher education environment (understanding the dynamics and complexities within the higher education environment).
  • A Legal qualification will serve as a strong recommendation.

Term of office: Five years, with the possibility of re-appointment for a further term.

Assumption of duties: As soon as possible.
