Duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide formal teaching for undergraduate as well as postgraduate modules in Foundation Phase and /or Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE). 
  • Participate in the work integrated learning programme of the faculty (teaching practice).
  • Ensure active involvement in research activities of the faculty and school.
  • Contribute to curriculum development in the field of Foundation Phase and ECCE specifically
  • Supervise and provide consultation sessions for undergraduate and/or postgraduate students.Contribute to leadership and perform administrative tasks related to the discipline.

Inherent requirements:

  • A relevant Master’s degree (NQF 9)  in Education with specialisation in teaching and learning in Foundation Phase and/or ECCE in schools. Candidates should submit an abstract of their thesis or dissertation to indicate relevance to Foundation Phase and / or ECCE.
  • Proven experience in the delivery of poster or oral presentations at academic conferences or equivalent activities.
  • Provide evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication in an accredited journal.
  • Registration for a Doctoral degree in Education with Foundation Phase and/or ECCE as a research focus.  Candidates must attach official proof of advanced registration towards a PhD.
  • Five (5) years’ relevant teaching experience in a school context OR two (2) years’ relevant teaching experience in higher education context.

Required competencies:

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University’s richly diverse environment. 
  • The ability to work in a team with colleagues within the school and faculty
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to function independently, as well as in a team environement.
  • Abiltiy to organise workload and to perform under pressure. 


  • A relevant Doctoral degree in Education with focus on Foundations Phase and/or ECCE teaching and learning or willingness to enrol for a doctoral degree in at the first available opportunity, if not yet attained by the time of the appointment.
  • Proven research record of relevant publications in national and/or international accredited journals.
  • Member of a or registration at a professional body.
  • Member of a national or international scholarly society or committee.
  • Evidence of previous involvement in engaged scholarship.
  • Experience in postgraduate supervision.
