Stellenbosch University (SU) is looking for a dynamic and experienced person to fulfil the key role of Deputy Registrar in the Registrar's Division.


The Deputy Registrar: Student Administration (Bellville Park Campus) reports to the Registrar of Stellenbosch University. The duties and responsibilities of this position comprise the following:

  • Strategically positioning academic student administration within a rapidly changing environment;
  • Providing strategic leadership within the learning and teaching environment, specifically relating to student administration and support at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB);
  • Fulfilling a strategic role in systems renewal and innovation regarding student administration processes, which include student-centred communication and service delivery, as well as enrolment management;
  • Undertaking the strategic and operational management of the Centre for Student Administration (CSA) (Bellville Park Campus), which includes the following: admission and selection, registration of students, drawing up timetables, and administration of tests and examinations;
  • Collaborating with divisions on Stellenbosch Campus with regard to student support functions;
  • Providing inputs with regard to relevant academic policies and procedures, and providing to the Director, USB, and the USB management team;
  • Taking on the responsibility for the integrity of academic records on Bellville Park Campus;
  • Monitoring trends (local and international) in the basic and tertiary education sectors, the Council on Higher Education, and the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework;
  • Developing a thorough knowledge of all internal – and, where applicable, also external – policies, processes and procedures within the sphere of responsibility of the Registrar(Stellenbosch Campus and Bellville Park Campus);
  • Providing effective mentorship for and management of staff to ensure continuous optimal service delivery;
  • Fulfilling ad hoc tasks as requested by the Registrar and the Director USB.

Job Requirements:

  • A suitable bachelor's degree along with at least eight years' applicable experience, OR a suitable postgraduate qualification along with at least five years' applicable experience;
  • Value-driven management skills;
  • Strong planning, organisational and prioritisation skills;
  • A proactive management style and the ability to take initiative;
  • A proven record of innovation with regard to business processes, including the application and advancement of technology in student administration processes;
  • Up-to-date knowledge of and skills in academic student administration;
  • Relevant financial and operational management skills;
  • Relevant knowledge of the basic and higher education sectors;
  • A client-services orientation and a student-centred approach to service delivery;
  • Excellent interpersonal relations with people at all levels within the University, particularly with students and at management level;
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • The ability to function effectively within a multilingual and multicultural environment;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Advanced computer skills and ability to use computer applications for data-based decision-making.


  • Experience with systems implementation for improved operational processes, and student-centred service provision and communication;
  • Communication skills in Afrikaans or isiXhosa.
