Duties and responsibilities:

  • Strive for excellence in all aspects of the core business of the Faculty, but with specific reference to Agriculture and strategic partnerships with the Agricultural Sector
  • To reinstate the identity of agriculture at the UFS through the development and the establishment of a new "face of Agriculture "at the UFS by executing the following duties in relation with that:
       • Maintain and enhance the Office for Agricultural Development and Coordination within the Vision and Mission Statements, Objectives, Values and Integrated Transformation Plan (ITP) of the UFS and the faculty.
       • To reposition Agriculture at the UFS in relation with the objective of the ITP.
       • To provide strategic leadership in order to ensure a bigger footprint with in Agriculture in Africa and to develop the UFS as a leading Institute in relation with that.
       • To align Agricultural Development with the demands of the Agricultural Industry and to influence the research agenda to contribute to food security and sustainable agriculture.
       • Motivation of personnel to buy into the new strategy.
  • Develop a comprehensive agenda for the development and offering of credit bearing short courses.
  • Develop strategic partnership with all role-players with Organized Agriculture, Commodity Groups, Agri-Businesses, Private Sector, Academic Institutions, Training and Development Institutions, Local and National Government, Industry and Business sector in the field of Natural and Agricultural Science. Also develop partnerships in Africa e.g. RUFORM, in strong relationship with Sustainable Africa.
  • Managing strategic projects relating to the Faculty and the UFS’ overall strategy.
  • Participate in community service initiatives.
  • Participate in committees both at Faculty and at University level.
  • Develop relevant research centers e.g. grain, Centre for Interpretation & Repository of Agricultural Data.
  • Take co-responsibility with the Dean to :
       • Ensure the achievement of the mission of all faculty-based programmes and initiatives.
       • Provide effective and appropriate academic direction and to develop and implement the strategic mission of the Faculty within the broader University context, with a focus on Agriculture.
       • To maintain excellence in terms of research outputs support the development of a research agenda for world class scientific research on international standards towards the outcome of sustainable agricultural development and food security
       • Ensure maintenance of all academic standards for programme accreditation across all programmes.
       • Management of student-related matters.
       • Ensure oversight of all internal and external relations and assist in securing strategic collaboration and third-stream income.
       • Over-see financial management, financial sustainability, and employment equity of the Faculty.

Inherent requirements:

  • Level of Associate Professor, Professor, or equivalent such as a senior position within the industry.
  • A doctorate in any discipline within Natural and Agricultural Science.
  • Five (5) years’ relevant experience with at least three (3) years of leadership and/or management experience.
  • Superior knowledge of research in the higher education environment or related level in industry


  • Track record of sustained commitment with a focus on teaching and learning.
  • Experience as a supervisor of postgraduate students.

Required competencies:

  • Established leadership and team-building capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate, collaborate, communicate and facilitate in complex environments.
  • Maintain sound relationships and forge collegiality in the Faculty.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proven academic stature and research record.

Term of office: Five (5) years, with a possibility of renewal for another term.

Assumption of duties: As soon as possible.

Salary: The salary scale is available on request.
