Duties and responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and publish in accredited DHET journals, with specific emphasis on ISI-listed journals with high impact factors.
  • Teach modules offered by the Department at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Teach specific modules in Macroeconomics, Financial Economics (such as Banking and Financial Markets) and quantitative modules such as Cross-sectional/Panel Econometrics or Time-series Econometrics.
  • Supervise postgraduate students with their Honours, Masters or PhD theses or research projects.
  • Develop new modules focusing on Quantitative Economics/Finance at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level at the Department, especially those relevant to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
  • Provide leadership to enhance the achievement of the Department's strategic plan with regard to research, teaching and engaged scholarship.
  • Provide leadership to enhance the use of quantitative techniques/methods in both teaching and research activities within the Department.
  • Attend and speak at conferences, research colloquia, workshops, and seminars in order to enhance research and discipline knowledge.
  • Identify opportunities and apply for grants/external research funding, whether as an individual or collaborative with colleagues in the Department.
  • Partake in activities that enhance the scholarly profile and reputation of both the Department and the discipline.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant research, community, industry, government and professional partners to establish collaborations and industry partnerships.
  • Assist in the academic and research administration within the Department.

Inherent requirements:

Senior Lecturer:

  • Ph.D. in Economics (NQF level 10) with a strong quantitative focus. Candidates with a PhD in Banking, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics or Data Science will also be considered as long as they can prove that they are able to teach and supervise in topics such as Macroeconomics, Cross-sectional/Panel Econometrics or Time-series Econometrics.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of paper/poster at national scholarly conferences;
  • An NRF rating or demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating;
  • Proven experience in supervision of graduated master’s students;
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals with specific emphasis on ISI-listed publications.
  • Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels.

Associate Professor:

  • Ph.D. in Economics (NQF level 10) with a strong quantitative focus. Candidates with a PhD in Banking, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics or Data Science will also be considered as long as they can prove that they are able to teach and supervise in topics such as Macroeconomics, Cross-sectional/Panel Econometrics or Time-series Econometrics.
  • Experience as external examiner for postgraduate students.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of research papers at national conferences, where there is evidence of peer review of papers.
  • Act as an editorial board member of high-quality national scholarly journals.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a specific scientific area of scholarship.
  • An NRF rating of C3 or equivalent status.
  • Proven experience in the supervision of graduated masters’ students.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals with specific emphasis on ISI-listed publications.
  • Serve as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels, OR show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.

Required competencies:

  • Proven ability to use the software packages EViews/R, Stata or gretl. Knowledge of SAS, R, Tableau, Python, C++, VBA Macros or Matlab (or similar Data Analytics-based packages focusing on analysing Big Data) will be an added advantage.
  • Proven and established knowledge and experience in quantitative research methodologies at especially postgraduate level.
  • Proven ability to think critically, analytically and across disciplines most likely to impact on the discipline entering the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues within the Department and the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.
  • Good planning, organisational and management skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent knowledge of software used in Quantitative Finance methods and techniques.
  • The potential to publish in high-impact journals specialising in Economics, Banking or Finance.
  • The ability to supervise postgraduate students specialising in Economics, Banking or Finance.
  • The ability to manage research activities.
  • Experience in using learning and teaching online platforms such as Blackboard, Moodie etc.
  • Business acumen.
  • Result orientated.
  • Strategic thinking.
  • Building coalitions.
  • Leading.

Recommendation:

  • Experience in research and teaching in Quantitative Economics or Finance.
  • Demonstrate ability to use Econometric software packages.
  • A minimum of five (5) years' lecturing experience in the higher education environment.
  • Evidence or potential to source external research funding.
  • Demonstrates excellent potential to publish in high quality ISI-listed journals in Economics, Banking or Finance disciplines.
  • Has a track record of teaching in English.
  • Is willing to contribute in a proactive and collegial manner to the Department.
  • Is prepared to be a senior member driving the quantitative research focus within the Department.
