Duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide formal teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Develop and design curriculum in Agriculture and related field of study at the Qwaqwa campus.
  • Initiate funded collaboration with national and international institutions in Science, Agriculture and Innovation.
  • Invite and host international Researchers for improved student empowerment and throughput.
  • Identify opportunities and apply for substantial grants for new research projects (individual and /or collaborative).
  • Ensure extensive involvement in research activities and publication in high-impact journals.
  • Supervise postgraduate students and or assist in supervision with postdoctoral fellows.
  • Facilitate linkages between the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture with Government, Science Councils, NGOs and NPOs for policy engagement.
  • Speak proactively at conferences and seminars in order to enhance research and discipline knowledge.
  • Perform general administration duties as applicable at university level.

Inherent requirements:

  • Ph.D. (NQF level 10) in the field of Agriculture.
  • An NRF rating of at least C3 or equivalent status.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
  • Proven experience in supervision at Masters’ and Doctoral level.
  • Experience as external examiner for postgraduate (at least MSc or PhD level) students.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship.
  • Editorial board member or guest editor of high-quality national or international scholarly journals.
  • Serve as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at high education levels, OR show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.

Required competencies:

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University’s richly diverse working environment.

Recommendation:

  • In-depth knowledge and experience on the roles of Centres in Higher Education.
  • Minimum of ten years' working experience in the Higher Education environment.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in both Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methodologies at postgraduate level.
  • Extensive experience especially within the field of Agriculture - industry, Smallholder Farming Sector and Government.
  • Experience in managing large research projects.
  • A good/successful research fundraising track record.
  • Evidence of sourcing external research funding.

Assumption of duties: 01 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter
