The Centre of Whole Genome Sequencing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an FWO-funded collaboration between Stellenbosch University in South Africa and the University of Antwerp, Belgium (the Global Health Institute, Department of Epidemiology and Social Medicine).

The Centre of Whole Genome Sequencing of M. tuberculosis is actively involved in the culturing and sequencing of M. tuberculosis isolates to facilitate translational research. To contribute to the advancement of M. tuberculosis drug resistance research globally, the Centre aims to employ semi- real-time Illumina sequencing as well as phenotypic drug susceptibility testing.

Duties:

  • Assisting with sample receipt, administration and tracking samples;
  • Performing DNA extraction from clinical samples as well as cultures;
  • Library preparation for next-generation sequencing;
  • Data management of next-generation sequences;
  • Working closely with a clinical trial team and communicating results clearly and concisely.

Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a Life Science field (e.g. Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Virology);
  • Able to travel between Tygerberg Campus and MRC;
  • Experience in NGS library preparation and molecular techniques;
  • Good communication skills, collaborative and multidisciplinary interests;
  • Excellent verbal and written knowledge of English.

Recommendation:

  • Experience in working with M. tuberculosis;
  • Trained to work in a BSL3 facility;
  • Proof of HPCSA registration as a medical technician.
