Minimum requirements:

  • Fellowship in Family Medicine from the College of Medicine of SA (FCFP) OR M Med (Family Medicine) as minimum qualification.
  • Registration with Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Family Medicine specialist is mandatory.
  • 5 years of experience as a Family Physician.
  • Degree/ Diploma in Health Professional Education or equivalent will be an added advantage.
  • A substantial number of publications in the relevant field of Family Medicine or Primary Health care and an ability to supervise research at postgraduate level.
  • Teaching, learning and research experience at tertiary level of 5 years.

Recommended Experience:

  • Extensive Teaching and training skills, Problem Oriented and Community Based experience.
  • Experience as an examiner in College of Medicine of South Africa.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Support and work with HOD in management of the Domain of Family Medicine at Senior Management Level – conduct meetings and represent the domain in other meetings.
  • Organise learning, teaching and training to produce high quality Health Professionals both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels with problem based and community oriented curriculum.
  • Take part in delivering high level of clinical services at Mthatha Regional Hospital and/or Community Health centres as part of requirements in joint appointment with ECDOH & WSU
  • Supervise and guide junior colleagues in teaching and service delivery.
  • Do active research and publish in peer reviewed journals, guide and encourage junior colleagues/Registrars to do relevant research in Family Medicine and its allied subjects.
  • Take part in outreach, in-reach and Continuous Medical Education to the General practitioners and the junior doctors.


  • Managerial skills are needed to oversee that the Academic and Clinical activities
  • Ability to coordinate other teaching platforms/ satellite teaching areas with regards to Family Medicine (Mthatha, East London and Port Elizabeth campuses).
  • Ability to drive problem based learning curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Provide efficient and effective leadership in the Domain of Family Medicine and Rural Health.
  • Provide high quality specialist services for the population.
  • To be accountable to HOD in terms of service delivery and academic activities.
  • Able to train the Registrars to become high quality Specialists.
  • To assist HOD to implement the policies and protocols in the domain of Family Medicine.
  • Participate in congresses, workshops and seminars to get latest knowledge and disseminate them to junior colleagues.
  • Conduct the Program of Medical in-service training in Family Medicine on a regular basis for Medical Staff.
