The Language Centre is one of four centres within the Division of Learning and Teaching Enhancement. The Centre provides language support and language services to Stellenbosch University staff and students, as well as to external clients. Language and Communication Development (LCD) is the environment within the Language Centre responsible for language support in terms of language acquisition and development (Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa language learning within various programmes), as well as academic literacy and professional communication.


  • Coordinating and teaching English language-acquisition modules and short courses at different levels to undergraduate and postgraduate South African and international students;
  • Testing students to determine proficiency levels for placement purposes;
  • Training Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) students;
  • Teaching academic literacies courses at first-year level, as needed;
  • Developing and reviewing syllabi, course material and assessments informed by innovative and appropriate learning and teaching approaches (including blended learning), which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst course participants;
  • Liaising with faculties, departments and the International Office regarding the Intensive English programme and English for Academic Purposes modules and/or short courses;
  • Managing all administration with regard to relevant modules and short courses;
  • Training and mentoring facilitators working in the Intensive English Programme and English for Academic Purposes modules and/or short courses;
  • Ensuring the quality of teaching and assessment in the Intensive English Programme and TEFL, as well as for English for Academic Purposes modules and/or short courses;
  • Performing context-specific research to inform best practice in the field(s) of second or foreign-language acquisition and/or academic literacies.

Job Requirements:

  • An appropriate master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages);
  • At least three years' teaching experience in the higher education environment, specifically in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) or English as a Second Language (ESL);
  • At least three years' experience in training student teachers to use a variety of online platforms (such as Moodle-based platforms, Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams);
  • Knowledge and experience in curriculum development and assessment protocols;
  • Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to work in a complex academic environment;
  • The ability to manage time and work according to strict deadlines;
  • Evidence of teaching ability and of fostering a positive learning environment for students;
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) as well as experience in using webinars, podcasts, SMART Board, etc. in teaching;
  • Excellent interpersonal, spoken and written communication skills in English.


  • A PhD, or enrolment for a PhD;
  • A certificate in teaching English online;
  • A commitment to continuous professional development;
  • Experience in blended learning and developing e-learning material;
  • Knowledge of Stellenbosch University's learning management system (Moodle);
  • Evidence of accredited publications on second-language acquisition, academic literacies and/or related topics.

Shortlisted candidates must be willing to take a computer proficiency test, as well as to practically demonstrate an aspect of teaching English as a second language.
