Data Scientist (Two-year Contract)

The AgroInformatics Unit at Stellenbosch University is seeking to hire a talented Data Analyst to join a highly diverse international and interdisciplinary team of professionals. The objective of the AgroInformatics Unit is to enable interdisciplinary and inter-institutional data-intensive research and innovation through reimagining the relationships between data, institutions, and disciplines to inform and enable innovative agro-economic decisions at different temporal and spatial scales. This will accelerate sustainable productivity growth in local and global agriculture through the development, deployment and stewardship of research and innovation in food and agricultural systems.

  • The primary role of the contracted individual will be to contribute to the G.E.M.S platform to ensure the functional interoperability of data related to Malawi and the greater Southern African region. The position is funded by the Centre for Agricultural Transformation in Malawi project, which has the objective of increasing smallholder prosperity through production diversification in Malawi. We are looking for an individual who wants to be part of a team with the objective of transforming Malawian agriculture.

Tasks include writing and executing code to automate data ingestion, cleaning, integration and analysis.

Job Requirements:
  • Honours or Masters Degree in the Life Sciences (including AgriSciences), Computational Sciences or Engineering with significant experience working in Biological/Agricultural Systems;
  • Data analysis skills and demonstrated practical experience in both the broader agricultural sector and in manipulating and managing data in biological/agricultural systems;
  • Extensive and proven experience in managing data in Excel;
  • Data modelling skills;
  • Data capture and reproducibility;
  • Experience in programming in R or Python;
  • Ability to function as part of an interactive team while demonstrating self-initiative to achieve the project's goals and the group's mission;
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Willingness to travel internationally;
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work within an international research team.
  • Experience with spatial data;
  • Experience with relational databases;
  • Experience as data scientist working within the domains of economics, plant protection, genomics, genetics, or breeding;
  • Critical and independent thinking.
