Technology Transfer Officer

The Directorate of Research Development and Innovation wishes to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced person to support and assist the Institution in pursuing its objectives. The main purpose of this position is to assist the Technology Transfer Office in providing innovation capacity-building and technology development support to all researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs in the University in matters pertaining to IP identification, development and commercialisation.

Minimum requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Science, Engineering, Business or Law, NQF 9
  • Doctoral degree in Law, Science and Engineering or in a technology-related field will be an added advantage
  • 3 years’ experience in the Intellectual Property Management Portfolio

Key Performance Areas:

  • Stimulate intellectual property awareness and commercialisation of IP stemming from WSU research and innovation;
  • Assist with innovation capacity-building
  • Assist with evaluation and protection of WSU IP;
  • Networking and marketing of IP at WSU;
  • Assist with the identification of commercialisation partners and commercialisation opportunities; and
  • Promote compliance and implementation of WSU’s IP Policy


Skills and Competencies:

  • Computer literacy (MS Office and general computer programmes)
  • Project management competence
  • In-depth understanding of intellectual Property Rights of Publicly Funded Research and Development Act, related Acts and regulations
  • Sound understanding of technology transfer systems and processes
  • Good organisational skills and work ethic
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Drivers licence and willingness to travel extensively within and outside the Eastern Cape Province
