The African Languages section of the School of Languages and Literatures has an opening for a new position, to be appointed as soon as possible in 2021. We invite applications for appointment to a full-time, permanent (tenure track) position at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level.

The section's major aim is to ensure the delivery of excellent undergraduate teaching, to strengthen and diversify our graduate programme and to develop a stronger research culture in the section. The section currently offers majors only in isiXhosa (for mother-tongue and second language students) and Sesotho, isiXhosa Honours and Masters and PhD by thesis only.

It is envisaged that the appointee will complement the expertise of other staff members, widen the range of linguistic and nonlinguistic areas within both the undergraduate and postgraduate curricula and continue the ability of the section to offer supervision on linguistics topics.

• A PhD (or in final stages of PhD) in African Languages, Literature or Linguistics, or a closely cognate field
• Experience of teaching, preferably at tertiary level
• Undergraduate and postgraduate supervision
• Evidence of a clearly laid-out research strategy
• Demonstrable willingness to contribute to the strengthening of a departmental culture, to provide very strong support for students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to creating an intellectual climate in which research, teaching, interdisciplinary collaboration and debate are interconnected

• A PhD Degree, with disciplinary experience in African Languages, Literature, Linguistics, or a closely cognate field
• A strong track record of publication (in DoHET-accredited and international journals), commensurate with career stage
• A strong track record of teaching at undergraduate level and, commensurate with career stage, of supervision at postgraduate level
• Experience of departmental administration/management, within committees, or management of projects, or tutor-team building
• Demonstrable willingness to contribute to the strengthening of a departmental culture to provide very strong support for students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to creating an intellectual climate in which research, teaching, interdisciplinary collaboration and debate are interconnected

• Teaching, convening and developing of undergraduate and postgraduate students
• Active contribution to the section's research projects
• Active participation in the School's research culture
• Administration commensurate with experience
• Contribution to blended learning modalities, as required

Appointment will take place in alignment with the Faculty's expectations for performance at each rank.
