In partnership with the Western Cape Government, Department of Health, we are seeking someone who will enhance our position as a leading Medicine and Health Sciences Faculty through teaching, research and service delivery.

The Division of Health Systems and Public Health is located within the Department of Global Health in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Division undertakes a range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research activities and service delivery within the Western Cape Government, Department of Health.

Appointment is on the joint establishment of Stellenbosch University and the Western Cape Government, Department of Health on the conditions of service of the University.

Duties:
Reporting to the Head of the Division of Health Systems and Public Health, the incumbent's duties will include:

  • Providing leadership in developing the fields of occupational medicine, occupational health and public health;
  • Increasing the output of relevant and high-quality research in occupational medicine, occupational health and public health;
  • Overseeing, participating in and growing postgraduate and specialist occupational medicine training and public health;
  • Advising and contributing to related teaching in undergraduate curricula for health sciences students;
  • Managing, overseeing and delivering occupational medicine clinical services, including overseeing medical officers and clinical staff as required;
  • Providing other occupational health services as required at relevant levels within the province;
  • Securing funding to support relevant research, training and service;
  • Engaging with provincial, national and international stakeholders.

Job Requirements:

  • A Master's level qualification in Occupational Medicine;
  • Registration with the HPCSA as Occupational Medicine Specialist;
  • Expertise and experience in occupational medicine, occupational health and public health undergraduate and postgraduate teaching or training;
  • Evidence of research experience and academic and service collaboration;
  • Evidence of working in relevant clinical settings in a leadership position;
  • Experience in mentorship and postgraduate supervision (at least at Master's level);
  • Project management skills, communication and networking skills.

Recommendation:

  • PhD in Occupational Medicine or relevant related area, or proof of near completion of PhD:
  • Excellent track record of initiating and executing research in the fields of occupational medicine and health, including public health;
  • Experience of successful postgraduate supervision at Doctoral level;
  • Track record of publications in high impact journals;
  • Evidence of securing funding;
  • Evidence of experience of national, regional and international recognition of research.
