Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Financial Risk Management

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science offers both undergraduate and postgraduate training in (Mathematical) Statistics, Actuarial Science and Financial Risk Management.  Members of the Department are also actively engaged in research and consulting in these fields.  The Department has excellent computing facilities (hardware as well as software) in support of these activities. A position at the Senior Lecturer or Lecturer level in the Financial Risk Management section is available in the Department.

Duties:

Lecturer:

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate courses in Financial Risk Management;
  • Participating in the Department's research activities in Financial Risk Management;
  • Providing study guidance to Honour's students.
  • Assisting with the Department's liaising with and expansion of the financial industry.

Senior Lecturer:

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses in Financial Risk Management;
  • Participating and taking a leading role in the Department's research activities in Financial Risk Management;
  • Providing supervision to postgraduate students;
  • Assisting with the Department's liaising with and expansion of the financial industry.
Job Requirements:

Lecturer:

  • At least a Master's degree in the Mathematical Sciences (Financial Risk Management, Mathematical Statistics, or Financial Mathematics);
  • The ability to teach Financial Risk Management at undergraduate level;
  • The ability to develop undergraduate modules in Financial Risk Management;
  • The intention to begin with and complete a PhD in Mathematical Sciences (Financial Risk Management, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematics or Applied Mathematics) if the incumbent does not have a PhD;
  • The ability to function effectively in a multilingual environment where Afrikaans and English are the dominant languages.

Senior Lecturer:

  • At least a Master's degree in the Mathematical Sciences (Financial Risk Management, Mathematical Statistics, or Financial  Mathematics), PLUS meaningful experience and engagement with public or private organisations, consulting activities, and/or policy that demonstrate management, leadership, expertise and/or thought leadership in the field of Quantitative Financial Risk Management/Analysis, with evidence of continuous professional development, OR a PhD in the Mathematical Sciences (Financial Risk Management, Mathematical Statistics, or Financial Mathematics);
  • The intention to begin with and complete a PhD in Mathematical Sciences (Financial Risk Management, Mathematical Statistics, or Financial Mathematics) if the incumbent does not already have a PhD;
  • Proven practical experience and/or proven technical research output with respect to retail credit risk within the quantitative Financial Risk Management field;
  • The ability to teach Financial Risk Management at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • The ability to develop undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Financial Risk Management;
  • The ability to function effectively in a multilingual environment where Afrikaans and English are the dominant languages.
Recommendation:

Lecturer:

  • Teaching experience;
  • Experience in retail credit risk modelling;
  • Computing skills, especially in at least two of VBA, MATLAB, R, Python and SAS.

Senior Lecturer:

  • Teaching experience at postgraduate level;
  • Computing skills, especially in at least two of VBA, MATLAB, R, Python and SAS
