Duties and responsibilities:
  • Act as main supervisor for postgraduate students from Honour's to PhD level in Image Studies and Art History.
  • Provide co-supervision to postgraduate students from Honour's equivalent to PhD level for the Fine Arts qualifications.
  • Teach, assess and co-ordinate modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Art history and/or Image Studies.
  • Initiate, conduct and sustain high-level research that feeds into teaching.
  • Disseminate recognised research through appropriate channels, including publishing articles in accredited journals and/or (chapters in) books, and participating in workshops, peer-reviewed conferences and symposia.
  • Contribute to programme development and curriculum review.
  • Perform administrative and leadership responsibilities in respect of learning and teaching, research and scholarly engagement.
  • Establish reciprocal relationships between scholarly engagement, research and teaching activities.
  • Maintain continued professional development and evaluation of practice relating to learning, teaching and assessment in line with qualifications, experience, changes in the subject discipline, pedagogic development and innovation in learning technology.
  • Contribute towards creating a strong Global South academic identity for Art History and/or Image Studies
Inherent requirements:

Senior Lecturer:

  • A PhD on NQF level 10 in Image Studies and/or Art History.
  • A minimum of five years' (5) lecturing and supervision experience at university level.
  • Experience in the supervision of graduated master's students, and as external examiner for such postgraduate students.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and/or international accredited journals (at least 5) and proven experience in the presentation of research papers at national and/or international conferences.
  • To complement and strengthen the department's existing theoretical and philosophical approach to the study of artistic and image phenomena with research situated within a broad interdisciplinary scope of historical and hermeneutical discourses.
  • Serve as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels, OR show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.

  • Associate Professor:

    • A PhD on NQF level 10 in Image Studies and/or Art History.
    • A minimum of eight years' (8) lecturing and supervision experience at university level.
    • Experience in the supervision of graduated master's and PhD students, and as external examiner for such postgraduate students.
    • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and/or international accredited journals (at least 10) and proven experience in the presentation of research papers at national and/or international conferences.
    • To complement and strengthen the department's existing theoretical and philosophical approach to the study of artistic and image phenomena with research situated within a broad interdisciplinary scope of historical and hermeneutical discourses.
    • Proven recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a particular area of academic scholarship (e.g. has served as a reviewer for DHET/ISI/IBSS journals).
    • Serve as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels, OR show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.

    Professor:

    • A PhD on NQF level 10 in Image Studies and/or Art History.
    • A minimum of ten years' (10) lecturing and supervision experience at university level.
    • Extensive experience in the supervision of graduated master's and PhD students, and as external examiner for such postgraduate students.
    • Proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals (at least 15), including representative publications as lead author.
    • To complement and strengthen the department's existing theoretical and philosophical approach to the study of artistic and image phenomena with research situated within a broad interdisciplinary scope of historical and hermeneutical discourses.
    • Proven experience in presentation of papers at national and international scholarly conferences, as well as the delivery of invited lectures and keynote addresses.
    • Act as editor and/or editorial board member of high-quality international/lSI/IBSS journals or relevant book series.
    • Proven international recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a particular area of academic scholarship (e.g. regularly serves as a reviewer for international/lSI/IBSS journals).
    • Serve as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels, OR show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.
    Recommendations:
    • An NRF rating or demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
    • Academic leadership and/or management experience.
    • Experience in art or image-related archival work and research.
    • Good interpersonal skills with colleagues and students.
