Deputy Director: Undergraduate Bursaries

The incumbent is responsible for the strategic and overall management of the Undergraduate Bursaries Division, including the allocation of all available undergraduate bursary funds in accordance with the policies and procedures of the University and donors. The incumbent plays a critical role in the management and coordination of NSFAS funding. The incumbent is responsible for the performance management of the staff of the Division Undergraduate Bursaries and the operational financial management of the Division. The incumbent acts as a representative of the University in liaising with prospective students, parents, current students, and external institutions.

Duties:
  • Acting as Division Head for the Undergraduate Bursaries Division;
  • Managing of the staff and budget of the relevant Division;
  • Liaising with other departments, faculties and external stakeholders;
  • Reviewing existing and developing new strategies applicable to the ever-changing bursary environment;
  • Aligning the functional strategy with the overall institutional vision and mission;
  • Compiling financial reports for management;
  • Coordinating and implementing the new guidelines of the new Department of Higher Education and training bursaries (NSFAS bursaries);
  • Managing the undergraduate bursary and loan funds and cost centres;
  • Facilitating and managing audits;
  • Providing guidance and advice to students, mainly regarding the possible financial support available for study at the University;
  • Advising colleagues and external institutions on the handling and management of bursary schemes, as well as facilitating the implementation of new bursary schemes;
  • Addressing student groups, organisations and departments on financial support opportunities;
  • Defining, in collaboration with the Information Technology team, the technical specifications for the development and improvement of the bursary system;
  • Providing management information and statistics to senior management, other role players and clients;
  • Representing the University at national FAPSA and NSFAS conferences and workshops, including presentations on financial support policies and procedures.
Job Requirements:
  • At least a B-Com Honours degree or a similar qualification with Accounting as a subject;
  • At least ten years' relevant experience in a similar environment, with a focus on managing NSFAS funding;
  • Proven experience in personnel management;
  • The ability to take initiative and provide guidance at senior level;
  • Excellent judgement, decision-making and problem-solving skills;
  • Strong organisational and planning skills;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Good conflict management skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • The ability to respect and maintain confidentiality;
  • The ability to work independently and effectively under pressure.
Recommendation:
  • At least five years' similar experience in a Higher Education or similar institution.
