The promising young academic will be appointed in a full time, permanent position at lecturer level on a six year developmental programme. In the first three years of the programme, the appointee is given a reduced workload to allow him/her to complete a doctoral degree, if not yet completed by date of appointment. In addition, the appointee is mentored and supported as s/he is introduced to academic life particularly with regard to his/her teaching, research and engaged scholarship responsibilities.

Duties and responsibilities:
50% Project Implementation Officer:
  • Develop relations and work jointly with team members including providing administrative and logistical assistance as required.
  • Develop relations with, communicate with and train beneficiaries of projects.
  • Provide technical support on projects as well as to beneficiaries.
  • Mentorship and constant communication with farmer beneficiaries.
  • Manage equipment and livestock used for projects.
  • Liaison with relevant stakeholders.
  • Upon request from the Chief Project Officer provide other support as required.
50% Extension Lecturer:
  • Lecture planning, preparation and research.
  • Contact and teaching time with students, both online and face-to-face.
  • Checking and assessing students' work.
  • Encouraging personal development via tutorial or pastoral work.
  • Practical course work with students.
  • Writing research proposals, papers and other publications.
  • Reading academic journals.
  • Supervising students and research staff.
  • Managing research budgets.
  • Attending and speaking at conferences and seminars.
  • Preparing bids for funding for departmental research projects.
Inherent requirements:
  • A Doctoral degree on NQF level 10 in Sustainable Agriculture or be in the process of completing a Ph.D. degree in Sustainable Agriculture or closely related field.
Recommendations:
  • A desire and ability to teach and advise university students, up to master's degree level, as well as farmers in livestock management.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in agriculture extension.
  • Ideal candidate must possess previous teaching experience.
  • The candidate should demonstrate an excellent knowledge of farmer development projects.
  • The candidate should feel comfortable in working with both commercial as well as small scale farmers - Previous experience in training and mentoring small scale farmers would be advantageous.
