The University of the Free State (UFS) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Plant Sciences.

The following Post-Doctoral Fellowship is available to support activities in the discipline of Plant Pathology:

Research area: Research on soil-borne pathogens of agricultural crops and their biological control.

The successful applicant will be expected to engage in full-time Post-Doctoral studies under the supervision of Prof. Wijnand Swart in the Division of Plant Pathology (Department of Plant Sciences).

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Lecturing 2nd semester course: Ecology of Plant Pathogens (Module PPLG3744).
  • Lecturing 2nd semester course: Host-parasite Interactions (Module PPLG4824 / 6824).
  • Planning, preparation of lectures and practical classes for undergraduate and post-graduate modules.
  • Checking and assessing students' class tests, tutorials and exams.
  • Supervision of post-graduate research (Honours, Masters and PhD).
  • Undertake and contribute to research, conducting individual research or collaborating with other researchers.
  • Publish own research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds for own research or scholarly projects.
  • Lead and develop internal networks, for example by chairing and participating in departmental and/or university committees or working groups.
  • Act as an external examiner to other universities and provide professional advice as appropriate.
  • Lead and develop external networks, for example with external examiners and assessors.
  • Develop links with external contacts such as other educational bodies, employers and professional bodies to foster collaboration.
  • Undertake international visits in order to establish partnerships, teach at partner institutions.
Minimum Requirements:
  • A doctoral degree obtained in the last four years in Plant Pathology with a specialization in soil-borne diseases and biological control of plant pathogens.
  • Applicants must be under the age of 50 years.
  • Must be based at the Bloemfontein campus of the UFS for the duration of the scholarship.
Comprehensive applications are invited, comprising of:
  • A PhD degree in Plant Pathology with strong undergraduate training in host-pathogen interactions and microbial ecology
  • A letter of motivation, including the earliest possible starting date
  • An up-to-date CV
  • Contact details of two academic referees
  • Record of academic transcripts
  • An example of your academic writing skills, by either providing an article or chapter of your PhD thesis
Value of the fellowship:
  • R 220,000 annual fellowship.
  • R 30,000 additional research expenses fund.

  • The successful incumbent may be considered for a permanent position if their performance is satisfactory during the post-doctoral term.
