Duties and responsibilities:
  • Teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate students in Biblical Hebrew and the related North-West Semitic languages within the cultural context of the ancient Near East.
  • Teach Bible Translation at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
  • Initiate, conduct and sustain high-level research and publication in Biblical Hebrew.
  • Recruit and supervise honours, master's and doctoral students in Biblical Hebrew.
  • Promote Biblical Hebrew and Bible Translation within South Africa and other non-western environments.
  • Attract external funding where possible.
  • Participate in community engagement initiatives.
  • Perform general administrative duties as applicable.
 Inherent requirements:

Associate Professor

  • A PhD on NQF level 10 in Hebrew or Near Eastern Studies (focus on languages within cultural context, but not cultural study without language competency).
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals in the area of Biblical Hebrew.
  • Experience as external examiner for postgraduate students.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of research papers at national or international scholarly conferences in the area of Biblical Hebrew, where there is evidence of peer review of papers.
  • Act as an editorial board member of high-quality national or international scholarly journal.
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship in the area of Biblical Hebrew.
  • An appropriate NRF rating or equivalent status.
  • Proven experience in the supervision of graduated master's or doctoral students in the area of Biblical Hebrew.
  • Service as an active member of a national scholarly society or committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels in the area of Biblical Hebrew or show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.

Professor

  • A PhD on NQF level 10 in Hebrew or Near Eastern Studies (focus on languages within cultural context, but not cultural study without language competency).
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals in the area of Biblical Hebrew.
  • Experience as external examiner for master's and doctoral students.
  • Act as editorial board member of high-quality international / ISI / IBSS journal.
  • Proven international recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in Biblical Hebrew scholarship (e.g. regularly serves as a reviewer for international / ISI / IBSS journals).
  • An appropriate NRF rating or equivalent status.
  • Demonstrated successful supervision of graduated master's and preferably graduated doctoral students in the area of Biblical Hebrew.
  • Proven experience in delivering keynote addresses at national or international scholarly conferences.
  • Serve as a member of an international scholarly society or an international committee or agency concerned with research in the area of Biblical Hebrew at higher education levels.
Recommendations:
  • Demonstrated leadership in an indigenous church and/or in an academic biblical colloquium focusing on ethnic groups.
  • Home language of Sesotho or another designated group or a non-western language.
  • Training, research, and/or publications in Biblical Hebrew linguistics and/or Bible translation.
  • Training, research, and/or publications in the languages of the ancient Bible translations (Greek, Aramaic, Syriac, Latin).
