Duties and responsibilities:
  • Present under- and postgraduate modules in Genetics.
  • Plan and present the practical component of 2nd and 3rd year Genetics modules.
  • Perform high-level research in one of the department's research areas.
  • Study guidance and research supervision of postgraduate students.
  • Contribute publications in accredited national and international academic journals.
  • Contribute toward general administrative duties in the department and curriculum development.
  • Participate in community service.
Inherent requirements:

Lecturer

  • A Master's degree on NQF level 9 in Genetics or closely-related field in the Biological Sciences.
  • Proven and extensive experience in the field of bioinformatics and big data handling.
  • Experience in lecturing at an undergraduate level.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of papers/posters at national scholarly conferences. Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship.
  • Proven experience in the supervision of graduated masters' students.
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in accredited national and international journals.
  • Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society or committee or agency.

    • The ability to be sensitive and understanding to the needs and feelings of others.
Recommendations:
  • Preference will be given to candidates who specialize in Conservation / Evolutionary Genetics, but candidates with a specialization in Molecular Genetics, Molecular Systematics or Human Genetics and with a strong background in bioinformatics will also be considered.
  • A PhD or willingness to enrol for a PhD in Genetics or closely-related field in the Biological Sciences, if not already attained by the time of the appointment.
  • An NRF rating or demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
  • Proven competency in Bash and Python/R scripting.
  • Experience in R programming.
