Associate Professor - Creative Writing (P000683)

Job Summary
The School of Languages on the Potchefstroom campus is looking for a candidate who can teach, assess, and participate in researching creative writing in African languages within the Subject Group Creative Writing at the NWU.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• A PhD in an applicable field, including but not limited to Creative Writing or Literature in one of the under-resourced South African languages
• A minimum of 4 years’ experience in teaching at a tertiary institution (in literary studies and/or creative writing) or relevant industry experience (i.e. as published author, experience in publishing, or performing arts). Post-graduate study guidance at a tertiary institution (in literary studies and/or creative writing) or post-doctoral experience. CV to provide clear evidence of standing, recognition and creative outputs appropriate to the level of associate professor.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
• Publication of creative works at a reputable publisher.
• Membership of relevant societies (i.e. African language and/or English literary/writers’ societies).
• Evidence of academic peer-reviewed publications in reputable and appropriate academic journals.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
• Excellent communication skills in English and also another South African under-resourced language.
• Excellent level of computer literacy experience of online teaching and learning.
• Successful creative writing (published by mainstream publishers), preferably prose.
• Proven teaching and research guidance skills.
• Relevant research and/or creative outputs.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
• Excellent administrative and organising ability.
• Ability and willingness to work as part of a team.
• Ability to self-motivate and work independently.
• Good interpersonal skills.

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching and Learning:
• Undergraduate teaching and learning and postgraduate supervision in any of the creative genres (i.e prose, children’s literature, drama, and poetry). Preference will be given to candidates who can teach or supervise creative writing in Setswana/Sesotho or any other under-resourced South African language.

2. Research and Creative Writing:
• Individual research and creative writing outputs in accredited platforms or journals. Peer-reviewing research articles and scholarly book contributions. Co-operation in subject group projects in creative writing and research.

3. Management and University service:
• Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as they arise.

4. Community Engagement:
• Assist in organising subject group and school community engagement projects.

REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
