Job Summary
Active participation within the School of Nursing research prorammes, community engagement and teaching and learning.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with General Nursing Science, Midwifery, Community Nursing Science (NQF level 8).
  • An Advanced Diploma/Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Education (NQF level 7/8).
  • A Master’s degree in Nursing Science (NQF level 9).
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as an Assessor and Moderator.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ clinical experience in Critical Care setting as a Professional Nurse.

In addition to the above:

SENIOR LECTURER:

  • A PhD (NQF 10) in Nursing Science
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ teaching experience in a higher education environment.
  • Postgraduate supervision of Master’s students - should have supervised at least 1 Master’s student to completion.
  • Applicants should have published at least 2 articles.

LECTURER:

  • A Masters’ degree in Nursing.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ teaching experience in a higher education environment.
  • Evidence of postgraduate supervision.

  ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

  • The applicants pursuing PhD in Nursing Science (NQF level 10) will be considered.
  • A Diploma in Critical Care (NQF level 6) or PG Diploma in Critical Care (NQF 8).

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Undergraduate Programme

  • Maintaining knowledge, skills and competencies in a discipline/field relevant to module allocated and in effective teaching-learning practices in that discipline/field.
  • Designing, developing, evaluating and improving curricula in line with current trends and disease profiles.
  • Utilise knowledge of contemporary, evidence-based teaching and learning practices to develop education resources in the School of Nursing.
  • Develop, coordinate and deliver courses and programs designed for flexible delivery using a range of teaching and learning methodologies within the Undergraduate Programme within the School of Nursing.
  • Coordinate the timely delivery of modules including the preparation and delivery of lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, assessment and marking.
  • Coordination of module review and re-development processes.
  • Provide timely academic counselling and advice to students.
  • Develop a network of contacts to support and contribute to the delivery and development of modules; and work with the staff at the School of Nursing in the smooth operation of the undergraduate programme.
  • Provide service to the university by contributing to the definition and achievement of its goals and enable it to be a healthy organisation. This includes being a member of or chair of University committees and working parties, as well as taking on roles such as key coordination roles within the University.

Community Engagement and Social Responsibility

  • Engaging the Community and Industry by liaising with relevant stakeholders including Industry, government, university, education and community bodies and the South African Nursing Council; and to initiate, foster and enhance national links with relevant industry, government, university and community bodies that can assist in the advancement of the School of Nursing.
  • Sound connections with relevant professional bodies and community groups and/or in professional practice.
  • Initiates and actively participate in the community engagement projects and development activities to the benefit of the communities.

Research and Scholarship  

  • Engages in Research and Scholarship activities including conducting research and disseminating research outcomes in a relevant and appropriate manner.
  • Attract and supervise higher degree students; enhance the research profile of the School of Nursing.
  • A track record of research activity, including refereed publications, external grants; and a number of post graduate students delivered.
  • Developing and maintaining strategic and productive partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels.
  • Developing and exploiting intellectual property.
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment that is conducive to high levels of engagement and standards of achievement in research, in line with NWU strategy.

Professional Nursing Practice

  • Management and administration by planning, reviewing and managing resources to facilitate teaching and learning in the School; advise and support on innovation and good practice in teaching and learning and research.
  • Represent the School of Nursing in relevant internal and external groups, meetings and committees as appropriate.
  •  Contribute to the development of the School through academic leadership and participation in strategic platforms.
  •  Be involved in practical accompaniment of students at different clinical accredited facilities as allocated to the School of Nursing undergraduate programme.

Occupational Health and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with the NWU health and safety protocols. Promote safety practice by students, teaching and learning in clinical practice must adhere to safety protocols.
  • Reporting of incidents as required by the profession.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  •  Facilitate teaching and learning module in the School of Nursing.
  •  Facilitate clinical teaching and learning activities in allocated modules.
  •  Clinical facilitation of skills in a simulation laboratory.
  •  Competence to carry out quality assurance of teaching and learning.
  •  Computer literacy skills, with the ability to use various Microsoft programmes.
  •  Communicating appropriately and effectively with students, other staff and individuals inside and outside the University.
  •  A high level of professional and ethical conduct.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  •  Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team.
  •  Demonstration of high standard of interpersonal and communications skills.
  •  The ability to function effectively under pressure.
  •  Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU.                    

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policyguidelines.
