Job Summary
Assist the laboratory and department with technical services including repairs, maintenance, design and manufacturing of research equipment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • National Diploma in any discipline or an equivalent NQF Level 6 qualification; together with an N3 in Mechanical Engineering; and a suitable trade certificate.
  • Either one of the following trade certificates: Fitting and Turning, Turning, or Die-Making.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a boilermaker or fitter and turner.

ADDED ADVANTAGE:

  • A minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching/Learning

  • Demonstrated practical competence across fitting and turning, machining, welding, and boiler-making, with additional experience in repairing electronic components and maintaining analytical laboratory equipment, contributing effectively to hands-on teaching, student support, and the upkeep of teaching and learning facilities.

Research

  • Practical expertise in fitting and turning, machining, welding, and boiler-making, complemented by experience in repairing electronic components and maintaining analytical laboratory equipment in support of research activities under the School of Chemical and Minerals Engineering and the Centre of Excellence for Carbon based Fuels.

Commercialization

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in fitting and turning, machining, welding, and boiler-making, with additional experience in electronic component repair and the maintenance of analytical laboratory equipment, supporting externally funded projects and collaborative research initiatives.

Supervision

  • Oversight and supervision of junior workshop staff, including on-the job training, skills development, and the identification of training and capacity-building requirements, while ensuring the effective and efficient operation of workshop activities.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Wiring and soldering.
  • Machining and fitting.
  • Boiler making and welding.

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Work accurately, quickly, safely and neatly.
  • Apply good time management.
  • Function autonomously and effectively as part of a team.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
