PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: SCHOOL OF NURSING

ROLE CLARIFICATION & KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) enjoys national and international acclaim for its continuing contribution to democratic change in South Africa and for making quality education accessible to all South Africans and developing centres of excellence of national importance. 

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty. The post requires the incumbent to develop, grow and drive nursing related initiatives at UWC that are nationally and internationally recognised. 
The School of Nursing is the largest School in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences with over 700 undergraduate and around 250 postgraduate students. The School offers the following SANC accredited programmes: Bachelor of Nursing undergraduate programme, 4 Postgraduate Diplomas (Nursing Education, Health Services Management, Midwifery and Primary Care Nursing, a research masters and PhD programme. The School consist of five divisions, namely, Academic Programs, Clinical and Community Engagement, Research, Academic Planning and Administration.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

  • Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the School of Nursing.
  • Conduct research and publish in the field of nursing or health related matters.
  • Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision.
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment.
  • Undertake community engagement and outreach.
  • Provide academic leadership and administration.
  • Manage a Division in the School.
  • Responsible for securing funding or third-stream income.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
At the level of Professor

  • PhD or equivalent, preferably in the field of Nursing.
  • A minimum of 10 to 15 years sustained teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • A minimum of 25 accredited discipline-recognised publications.
  • Completed at least 2 PhD graduates (supervision or co supervision) and at least 7 Master’s graduates with the majority as main supervisor. 
  • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and definite international presence in his/her discipline.
  • Demonstrated success in leading and securing research grants.
  • NRF rating or an equivalent indicator of scholarly standing (election to a learned academy, editorial leadership, recognised international award). 
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse / Midwife / Community Health Nurse / Psychiatric Nurse.
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Nursing Educator.

At the level of Associate Professor

  • PhD or equivalent, preferably in the field of Nursing.
  • A minimum of 6 to 9 years sustained teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • A minimum of 15 accredited discipline- recognised peer reviewed publications. 
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision of at least 1 PhD and 5 Masters students (majority as main supervisor).
  • Demonstrated success in securing individual or collaborative research funding.
  •  Evidence of expertise, national standing, and where appropriate, an international presence in his/her discipline.
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse / Midwife / Community Health Nurse / Psychiatric Nurse.
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Nursing Educator.

Added advantage

  • NRF rating for Associate Professor.
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as an Advanced Mental Health Nurse or Advanced Midwife and /or Health Services Manager or Primary Care Nurse.
